Study, work, or a smaller step? Take the measure first.
Compare against your actual target: what each path costs in cash and in lost income, which requirement it closes, and what an offer can’t settle. No score and no salary guess.
See it before typing anything
Three finished plans, with fictional people.
The examples below are worked as of 2026-11-02, and don’t update without JavaScript.
A fictional example Maya: a year’s master’s, a three-month course, or moving across first
Maya wants to be a finance business partner. The arithmetic is simple enough to check yourself: 12,000 tuition + 1,500 relocation + 12 × 1,000 living = 25,500 cash; with 5,000 confirmed, 20,500 is still to find; and lost income of 12 × 2,000 = 24,000 is a separate view.
Or answer these on paper
- What does the actual target ask for? Copy it down.
- For each: what have you personally done, and what proves it?
- Compare at least three paths: study, a smaller bridge, working first.
- For each, write separately: cash out, money confirmed, income lost.
- Which requirement does the costly path close that the cheap one doesn’t?
3 paths, 8 gates not known yet, 0 date problems to look at. There’s no score and no prediction of income.

What each path costs
Cash, what’s still to find and lost income answer different questions, so they’re kept apart and never added into one total.
-
A one-year full-time master’s · Ireland
- Cash out
- EUR 25,500
- EUR 12,000 tuition + EUR 1,500 relocation + 12 × EUR 1,000 living = EUR 25,500
- Still to find
- EUR 20,500
- After EUR 5,000 confirmed funding: EUR 20,500, before your own savings.
- The total doesn’t tell you when. Deposits and first fees often fall due before funding or income arrives, so set the due dates against the arrival dates.
- Lost income (a separate view)
- EUR 24,000
- 12 × EUR 2,000 = EUR 24,000. It never leaves your account, so it isn’t added to the cash above.
-
A three-month evening data and reporting course · Ireland
- Cash out
- EUR 3,900
- EUR 900 tuition + EUR 0 relocation + 3 × EUR 1,000 living = EUR 3,900
- Still to find
- nothing on paper
- After 3 × EUR 2,000 confirmed income: nothing on paper, before your own savings. Left over on paper: EUR 2,100.
- Even with no gap in total, it doesn’t follow that early bills are covered. Deposits and first fees often fall due before funding or income arrives, so set the due dates against the arrival dates.
- Lost income (a separate view)
- EUR 0
- 3 × EUR 2,000 = EUR 6,000, less confirmed income during it: EUR 0. It never leaves your account, so it isn’t added to the cash above.
-
Move across inside my current company first · Ireland
- Cash out
- EUR 12,000
- EUR 0 tuition + EUR 0 relocation + 12 × EUR 1,000 living = EUR 12,000
- Still to find
- nothing on paper
- After 12 × EUR 2,000 confirmed income: nothing on paper, before your own savings. Left over on paper: EUR 12,000.
- Even with no gap in total, it doesn’t follow that early bills are covered. Deposits and first fees often fall due before funding or income arrives, so set the due dates against the arrival dates.
- Lost income (a separate view)
- EUR 0
- 12 × EUR 2,000 = EUR 24,000, less confirmed income during it: EUR 0. It never leaves your account, so it isn’t added to the cash above.
What you’d have to believe
- Choosing “A one-year full-time master’s” over “A three-month evening data and reporting course” means EUR 21,600 more in cash, and separately EUR 24,000 more in lost income. Those are different views and aren’t added. These run for different lengths, 12 months against 3, so their living costs aren’t like for like. Of that, fees and relocation differ by EUR 12,600. The rest is living costs, much of which you’d pay either way. You’d have to believe it closes what the other path doesn’t (“The posting asks for a finance-related degree or equivalent”) and is worth that.
- Choosing “A one-year full-time master’s” over “Move across inside my current company first” means EUR 13,500 more in cash, and separately EUR 24,000 more in lost income. Those are different views and aren’t added. You’d have to believe it closes what the other path doesn’t (“Power Query automation”, “The posting asks for a finance-related degree or equivalent”) and is worth that.
Six gates, each its own question

- not known A one-year full-time master’s · Recognition: Where you want to use this, is it recognised, by whom, and does the content match? A similar course name doesn’t establish equivalent content. Who answers: A recognition body or the employer
- not known A one-year full-time master’s · Licensing: Is this job regulated where you want to do it? If so, who licenses it, and does this course count? Who answers: The regulator there

The evidence plan
Not looked into isn’t the same as missing. Nothing here invents an achievement.
- Validated: direct Monthly variance reporting What you have: Prepared April-June monthly variance schedules (me)
- Candidate evidence, not yet validated Independently lead supplier savings What you have: Compared supplier quotations (team) The number in this line doesn’t match the evidence you wrote. Smallest test: Lead one small renewal negotiation at my current company. It passes if: I negotiate it and the result is written down. Date: 2027-03-31 What you’d keep, in your own words only: Compared supplier quotations: 12%, the previous supplier baseline, three months (a team result). Be ready to answer: How did you get that number? Which part of the team’s work was yours? Could you show me the evidence?
- Not looked into yet Power Query automation Not looked into yet, which isn’t the same as not having it. First answer: what did you actually do, who owned it, at what scale, with what result, and when? Smallest test: Rebuild one monthly report in Power Query. It passes if: Someone else can refresh it with one click. Date: 2027-02-28
- Not looked into yet The posting asks for a finance-related degree or equivalent Not looked into yet, which isn’t the same as not having it. First answer: what did you actually do, who owned it, at what scale, with what result, and when? Smallest test: Ask the employer whether experience plus a professional qualification counts as equivalent. It passes if: A written answer. Date: 2027-01-31
What this isn’t
- It isn’t a judgement on admission, a visa or a job, it isn’t financial or legal advice, and it doesn’t predict income or return. It holds only what you wrote and the questions that follow from it.
A fictional example Ren: the deposit falls due before the funding answer
Ren holds a one-year master’s offer in the UK. Tuition is in pounds and relocation in euros, so they aren’t added together. The funding answer comes 45 days after the deposit is due.
Or answer these on paper
- What conditions does the offer set, and where are you with each?
- Beyond admission: permission to study, permission to work, recognition, licensing and hiring. Where does each stand?
- Deposit, funding answer, permit, start: are those four dates in a workable order?
- If the permit or funding falls through, is the deposit refundable?
- If you didn’t go, what’s the other path?
2 paths, 6 gates not known yet, 1 date problem to look at. There’s no score and no prediction of income.

-
A one-year master’s offer in the UK · the UK
- Cash out
- GBP 27,200; EUR 800
- GBP 14,000 tuition + EUR 800 relocation + 12 × GBP 1,100 living. By currency: GBP 27,200; EUR 800. Different currencies aren’t added together.
- Still to find
- GBP 27,200; EUR 800
- GBP 27,200; EUR 800, before your own savings. Not counted: the funding isn’t confirmed; income during it is blank.
- If the unconfirmed money came too
- GBP 21,200; EUR 800
- That’s only a scenario. Unconfirmed money isn’t money you can rely on, and income from work also depends on whether you’re permitted to work.
- The total doesn’t tell you when. Deposits and first fees often fall due before funding or income arrives, so set the due dates against the arrival dates.
- Lost income, if you earn nothing during it
- EUR 21,600
- 12 × EUR 1,800 = EUR 21,600. Income during it is blank, so this shows what you’d lose if you earned nothing. It’s one case, not a conclusion. It never leaves your account, so it isn’t added to the cash above.

Why these can’t be compared yet
- Some paths are in different currencies, so they aren’t compared directly. To compare them, add a dated rate, which stays labelled as yours.
